A company, Holista CollTech has recently filed a patent for a technology that will aid delivery of fat-soluble medications, including CBD, by creating a water-soluble delivery system. The new technology will make CBD a more potent drug (by up to 40 times) which will allow patients to reduce their dosages, and make CBD oil more palatable for the elderly and the young.
CBD or cannabidiol is an anti-inflammatory and non-psychoactive chemical found in hemp plants. The substance recently became popular after the federal government legalized hemp under the Farm Act in December 2018. The act removed hemp from the list of controlled substances allowing the legal production of hemp.
Within a few weeks, CBD, a chemical derived from hemp garnered popularity across the nation as people started using it for relieving stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other health issues. CBD became known to relieve the symptoms of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Tourette’s and epilepsy.
From reducing muscle spasms and chronic pain to improving the overall health, many people began using CBD and its products. With the consumers inclined heavily towards it, companies started cropping up quickly. Whether it was a small scale start-up or big multinational corporations, a gamut of organizations entered into the CBD space.
Products like CBD gummies, oils, tincture, capsules, isolate, vape pens, creams, ointments, etc have become readily available on online websites and brick n mortar stores. People can easily walk in a store and buy a bottle of CBD oil now.
The stigma around CBD has gradually decreased, but the enforcement officials and agencies like the Food and Drug Administration remain concerned about public health. The FDA recently issued warning letters to 15 companies for selling illegal CBD products that either contains a higher concentration of THC, the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana or are marketed as alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs.
The agency has warned consumers to purchase only from legitimate stores and brands as the black market for CBD has also grown multifold over the past year. Consuming such products is not only harmful to your health but might also result in a positive drug test.
The maximum legal limit permitted by the federal government for THC is 0.3% per unit dry weight. If a product consists of any more THC than this limit, it will be considered as an illegal product. THC or tetrahydro cannabidiol is the psychoactive chemical that is responsible for causing hallucinations when people smoke weed. It tends to give a euphoria like feeling and can even cause dizziness, nausea, headache, trigger seizures, etc.
The bioavailability of CBD
Fat-soluble molecules have poor bioavailability as they do not dissolve properly and reach the bloodstream. Due to this, a higher dosage needs to be ingested, which is costly and inefficient. The new platform technology is expected to have particular benefits for the CBD oil industry where the active material is costly, poorly water-soluble and scarce.
The head and project leader of Holista’s Technical Advisory Panel, Dr. Roscoe Moore Jr. said that working on this new technology is exciting. Most medicines that are consumed orally are wasted due to the poor absorption levels by the body, especially substances like CBD which is also exorbitantly priced said, Moore.
The most interesting part of this new technology is that the final molecule is preserved exactly as it is in nature, which means it will not require a lengthy approvals process anywhere in the world. They are only using materials approved by ‘Generally Regarded as Safe’ (GRAS) by the FDA, said Moore.
He is the retired Assistant Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Moore currently is associated with several company boards that are linked to CBD in the U.S. and Canada.
CBD oil has a musky, lingering bitter and earthy taste due to its high concentration of compounds that make it extremely unpalatable. This makes it difficult to formulate CBD for oral consumption.
The technology used for taste masking linked to this patented formulation uses botanicals approved from GRAS to allow wider applications in food and pharmaceutical for oral dosing.
Dr. Swanand Malode, leader of the teams in Asia and Europe who worked on this technology for more than five years said that Holista drew from parallel work being done on the turmeric molecule which is highly fat-soluble.
CBD, unlike THC, does not have any psychoactive effects on users, hence, the popularity. Whether it is a young child who suffers from epilepsy, an adult from stress or an athlete from muscle injury or pain, every age group seems to be benefitting from CBD and its products.
