Most of you will know this answer, but for those who don’t, it’s Abraham Lincoln. Located in Springwood Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois lies the final resting place of the 16th president of America. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Illinois and receives around 200-300 visitors every day!

This article is going to take a look at just why people revere him so much and also what he did that made him such an important historical figure.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky in 1809. Lincoln’s father, Thomas was a farmer and wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. However, Abraham’s mother, Nancy adamantly wanted her son to have a good education so she encouraged him to stay at school even after his father had said that he could leave.

Lincoln continued with his education and even attended a local seminary where he met Joshua Fry Speed. Neither of them completed their studies but they remained friends for the rest of their lives. When Lincoln was nineteen he moved to New Salem where he got a job as a store clerk and was well liked by everyone in the village.

Lincoln enjoyed his life in New Salem and even became involved in local politics. However, things changed when he met Mary Todd. Lincoln began to struggle with his feelings for Mary and found it hard to concentrate on his work. In 1837 Lincoln admitted that he loved her but was reluctant to ask her out. However, things got the better of him and they were married in November 1842.

Lincoln soon became involved with the Whig party which was a political party that wanted to abolish slavery through peaceful means. Lincoln was a lawyer by now and he hated slavery so this helped lure him into politics even more. Lincoln turned out to be a good politician and he eventually managed to get himself elected as a Whig representative in the Illinois General Assembly.

Presidential elections were held in America’s state’s in the early days of the country, and this gave Lincoln an opportunity to run for President. He was well known and liked at this stage and had just won his second term as a state representative, so it seemed like the perfect time for him to run!

Lincoln joined forces with War Democrat party which was made up of conservative Democrats who supported the war against Mexico. Lincoln became very popular with these people because he was anti-slavery.

In 1846 Lincoln became a candidate for President. He began the campaign with a speech that he gave in New Jersey. “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” This line has been quoted ever since and is so famous that people even use it when they don’t know what to say.

However, Lincoln lost the election and there were many reasons as to why this happened. Lincoln was very unpopular with most people because of his anti-slavery stance which meant he had a hard time winning over the southern states to vote for him.
