does sugar cane grow faster on sand

The sugar cane industry is a huge economic driver for many countries around the world. For example, in Brazil alone, it generates more than $12 billion dollars per year. Sugar cane plantations are typically found on flat land with sandy soil and shallow water tables near rivers or streams, but does growing sugar cane on sand make business sense? A researcher at the University of Queensland’s Agronomy Department believes that planting sugar canes on sand may not be as productive as planting them in rich loam soils.

Agronomy researcher: does sugar cane grow faster on sand?

Does sugar cane grow faster on sand or rich soil with fertilisers and water provided regularly? This is a question agronomists have been trying to answer for decades. Most people would think that the choice of location may not matter, but it turns out that there are measurable differences in plant growth when grown in different soils. Let’s explore this topic further by looking at some recent research conducted by Dr Bruce MacKenzie from Charles Sturt University who has been studying how plants react to different environments since 1971. In his most recent paper, he investigates whether growing crops such as wheat, barley and canola make them more likely to be attacked by root rot and other fungal diseases.

In his study, Dr MacKenzie found that canola grown on a loam soil was more likely to contract root-rot fungus than those in peaty soils (pH of around five) as the fungi cannot survive for long periods at higher pH levels. This is because roots need oxygen but as they grow deeper into the ground, there’s less available due to anaerobic conditions created by high concentrations of organic matter below the surface which are not broken down rapidly enough through bacterial activity.

As well as this he also discovered that barley grew faster when planted on sand – however wheat does better in clayey soils with good drainage such as loams or peats
