The Fire and Lightning resistances are the most important ones to have. Increases to one’s Maximum Resistance can only be obtained through the use of Unique items or Runewords, or through the socketing of particular Runes.

The maximum level that Resistances can be increased to is normally 75%; however, the addition of Maximum Resistances can raise this cap to as high as 95%. Because it cannot go higher than 95%, it is pointless to have a Maximum Resistance that is higher than 20% to a specific Resistance.
